America depends on services for economic growth and jobs.

Services fuel America’s economic growth and jobs, generating more than 77 percent of employment in the United States and 67 percent of GDP. Services are a major component of the manufacturing and agricultural sectors, and they boost the competitiveness of those sectors.

5.9 million services jobs were created in the United States between 2015 and 2016.

In 49 out of 50 states, services jobs provide 70 percent or more of overall employment.

Nationally, services job employment is over 7 times greater than manufacturing job employment.

Nevada (83 percent), New York (82 percent), Florida (82 percent), New Jersey (81 percent), and Massachusetts (81 percent) have the highest percentages of services employment

In Wyoming, the state with the lowest amount of services employment (69 percent), services job employment is still over 5 times greater than agriculture employment and over 9 times greater than construction employment.

Education, healthcare, and social services are the country’s top employers with over 20 percent of jobs in 49 states.

Alaska has the highest percentage of government employment (11 percent). Still, private services employment is more than 6 times greater than government employment.

In Indiana and Wisconsin, the states with the highest percentage of manufacturing jobs (both 18 percent), services jobs are more than triple the number of manufacturing jobs.

Wyoming and North Dakota have the highest percentage of agricultural employment (12 percent and 9 percent respectively). Services jobs are more than 5 times greater than the number of agricultural jobs in Wyoming, and more than 7 times greater than agricultural jobs in North Dakota.

The findings are based on 2016 U.S. Census Bureau figures, the latest year for which data is available. The congressional-level analysis corresponds to the districts for that year (115th Congress).
